'NO PARKING' Signs on Private Property

Private property owners are responsible for installing signs on their property to prohibit parking.

Paved/Improved Parking Lots

The owner or person in lawful possession of any private parking area shall be deemed to have given consent to unrestricted parking by the general public unless the parking area is posted with signs as prescribed below, and they are clearly visible and readable from any point within the parking area and at each entrance to the parking area. The parking restrictions shall contain:

  1. Restrictions on parking (such as NO PARKING AFTER 10 P.M. or PARKING FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY)
  2. Disposition on vehicles found in violation of the parking restrictions (i.e. VIOLATORS WILL BE FINED, or VIOLATORS WILL BE TOWED)
  3. Maximum cost to the violator, including storage fees and any other charges that could result from the disposition of a vehicle in violation of parking restrictions
  4. Telephone number and address where the violator can locate their vehicle
  5. Each sign shall state "Phoenix City Code Sec. 36-144"

These signs can be custom made and purchased at any private sign manufacturing shop. Most traffic barricade companies have their own sign manufacturing shops and these companies can be found in the yellow pages

Unimproved or Vacant Lots

Per City Code Section 36-145, no person shall park, or permit to be parked any motor vehicle upon any lot or area within the City which is not dust-free. NO PARKING signs are not required to prohibit parking on a non-dust-proofed lot, but if property owners choose to do so, the owners are responsible for posting their own NO PARKING signs. Property owners can alternatively purchase REGISTERED LOT - NO PARKING signs through the City on unimproved vacant lots, in accordance with City Code Section 36-148.

REGISTERED LOT - NO PARKING sign procedure:

  1. A property owner may apply for REGISTERED LOT - NO PARKING signs through the Neighborhood Preservation Division of the Neighborhood Services Department at 602-256-3388 (NSD Customer Service Counter)
  2. The property owner will be charged a fee of $35 per 100 feet of street frontage by the Neighborhood Services Department. (Fee subject to change)
  3. Upon receipt of the request, along with the legal description of the property and payment for the signs from the property owner, the Neighborhood Preservation Division will request the Street Transportation Department to post one or more REGISTERED LOT - NO PARKING signs. Signs will be installed about every 200 feet or more along the street frontage. Once installed, the Police Department will be notified of the new Registered Lot signs for enforcement.
  4. These signs will be maintained by the City as long as the lot remains an unimproved vacant lot, but it is up to the property owner to notify the Street Transportation Department if a sign is damaged or missing by calling 602-262-4659.
