A "gateway" arch has been created by the artist in collaboration with the East McDowell Civic Association. Spanning McDowell Road, the vertical elements of the arch are installed into the landscaped right-of-way between the sidewalk and the curb on the north and south sides of McDowell. Enhancement with direct lighting at night draws attention to the arch as a neighborhood landmark for businesses along McDowell Road. The design of the arch refers to the cityscape of buildings in the area, and the apex is an abstract of a picket fence. It is made of structurally reinforced steel and has been finished with white enamel paint.

Once known as “Miracle Mile”, McDowell Road between 12th and 20th Street was a vital business district in the early 1950’s. With the rapid growth of the city bringing an abundance of shopping centers elsewhere, the area soon experienced a decline. In an effort to revitalize the neighborhood, the East McDowell Civic Association joined forces with artist Michelle Stuhl to create a gateway for the city.

The result is a white arch resembling an abstract version of a picket fence over the road. The fence acts as a landmark for the stretch of road between Central Avenue and 20th street. “It symbolizes reliving the miracle,” said Charles Civer, Civic Association member, describing the association’s excitement about the new structure. With its bright exterior, the fence appears as a ray of hope while referencing past days of the city's development.
