This functional artwork acknowledges the importance of the trucking industry to the operation of Civic Plaza in the gate spindles which represent diesel truck camshafts. The heads that rise above the gates pay homage to the first Phoenix urban dwellers, the Hohokam people. These are enlarged reproductions of heads found on prehistoric Hohokam clay figurines sculpted by C. Matt Thomas. The artwork consists of seven gates on 5th Street, between Monroe and Jefferson Avenue.
