The city of Phoenix won the 2013 Outstanding Groundwater Project Award from the National Ground Water Association for incorporating innovative technologies in the aquifer restoration program.
Water Services staff implemented a new type of injection method to prevent the formation of disinfection byproducts in the aquifer by using fabricated glass beads as a filter pack. The innovation has reduced annual operations and maintenance costs by more than $110,000.
Phoenix is the first city in the country to use the technology.
