$1.7 Million to Green-Retrofit Sunnyslope Manor Assisted Housing
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded Phoenix $1.7 million in competitive funds to green-retrofit 116 Sunnyslope Manor units at 205 E. Ruth Ave., a Section 8 property for seniors 62 and older.
$3.4 Million to Green-Retrofit Marcos de Niza Public Housing
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded Phoenix $3,408,000 in competitive funds to make 374 Marcos de Niza public housing units energy-efficient.

Phoenix Applies for $121 Million Sky Train Extension Grant
Phoenix has submitted a competitive grant application to fund a PHX Sky Train line extension to serve all passenger terminals -- extending Stage 1 of the Sky Train project to Terminal 3. This grant funding would allow the PHX Sky Train to connect all airport terminals earlier than the current funding allows. Phoenix is requesting $121.9 million to help fund this $179.7 million stage of the Sky Train project. The U.S. Department of Transportation plans to announce grant awards in January 2010. The PHX Sky Train will be a gateway for visitors to and from Sky Harbor International Airport to Phoenix and surrounding areas via METRO Light Rail.
Dept. of Justice Awards $1.7 Million to Phoenix to Reduce Violent Crime
This competitive award creates four jobs: two Assistant City Prosecutors cross-deputized as Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys, to increase federal prosecution of firearms-related and border-related violent crimes; and two new Criminal Intelligence Analysts for Phoenix Police Dept.'s Home Invasion Kidnapping Enforcement (HIKE) Unit. This funding will also provide equipment and overtime for the HIKE Unit.
$265,130 for Meals Served Out of Phoenix Senior Centers
This award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will help fund the more than 630,000 meals prepared and consumed at senior centers and delivered to homebound Phoenix seniors each year.
$29.1 Million to Support Phoenix Transit Infrastructure
The Phoenix Public Transit Department has been awarded $29.1 million for improvements to City of Phoenix transit system and infrastructure, including $3.9 million for two METRO light rail improvement projects.
Phoenix Awarded $830,000 to Reduce Diesel Emissions
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $830,000 to Phoenix to reduce diesel emissions by retrofitting city-owned equipment and replacing an aging garbage truck with a hydraulic hybrid truck. These stimulus dollars will create up to 10 private-sector jobs and support the city's renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals.
Work Has Begun on $11.7 Million Sky Harbor Taxiway Project
The $11.7 million in funding has been received from the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration for Taxiway C rehabilitation at Phoenix Sky Harbor. Work is underway on this project that will employ 285 people.
