As your newly elected Phoenix City Councilman, I want to take this opportunity to tell you a little about my plans for District 5 and the City of Phoenix, and to ask for your comments and suggestions.
My goal is to make West Phoenix a better place to live, work and raise a family. I plan to continue to attract more jobs to the district and to protect our neighborhoods from crime, blight, graffiti and incompatible development. Public transportation also is an important issue - one that I believe has a tremendous impact on our quality of life. As your councilman, I want to ensure any transit plan being proposed will not only benefit the entire city, but also District 5.
In the near future, I will be hosting community forums to give all District 5 residents the opportunity to have their opinions heard and questions answered. As we get closer to the first forum, I will send you additional information providing more details including the date, time and place of event.
to let me know your concerns and priorities for District 5 and the City of Phoenix. Please take the time to let me know about important issues in your community and your neighborhood.
If you have upcoming meetings or events that you'd like me to attend, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at (602) 262-7446 or e-mail me at claude.mattox@phoenix.gov. I look forward to working with you.
On Sept. 7, 1999, Phoenix residents overwhelmingly passed Proposition 101 in what could be described as a millennium gift to future generations.
The Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative increases Phoenix's sales tax by one-tenth of one percent and is expected to generate about $256 million over its 10-year span. In addition to community park improvements, the measure also includes funds to expand the Sonoran Preserve in north Phoenix and to develop nine regional parks.
In District 5, Prop.101's passage means:
Picnic tables, park benches and cooking grills already have been installed at Marivue, Orme, Sunridge, Maryvale Tot Lot and Colter parks.
Playground equipment, a ramada and parking lot improvements will get underway early next year at Desert Star Park.
A playground shade cover will be installed at Colter Park and a new playground will be constructed at Cielito Park, both beginning in January 2000.
General improvements such as additional playgrounds, basketball courts, soccer fields, drinking fountains and security improvements will begin in January 2002 at Desert West, Mariposa, Little Canyon and West Plaza parks.
