Dear District 5 Residents:
Economic development and bringing good jobs and career opportunities to our community is a very high priority for me. Part of this issue is the need to have a qualified workforce in place when those jobs become available.
There are many variables that are coming together to bring this goal to fruition. The Agua Fria Freeway (Loop 101) should be completed by the end of this year, providing easy access to our community from the downtown and East Valley, and from the western and California markets. Several hundred acres of land have been designated for a commerce park development to attract corporate headquarters, general offices, technology companies, and high-tech manufacturing and call/data centers. With this infrastructure and support from the city's Community and Economic Development Department, a big part of the puzzle is in place.
Now we must address the workforce and job development issues. The City of Phoenix Youth and Education Office, Community and Economic Development Department and I have conducted preliminary meetings with members of the business and education community to set an initial agenda to address workforce development and the school-to-work issue. The intent of this program will be to:
- enhance communications between businesses and schools In west Phoenix;
- facilitate school-business collaboration and partnerships; and
- look for opportunities to work together on workforce
preparedness issues.
To be competitive in the economic development market, we must have a workforce that is prepared for entry-level to management-level positions. This newly formed work group will help better define the issue as it applies to District 5, develop a plan of action and work with all interested groups to implement the program.
This is an exciting time and opportunity for District 5. I look forward to our continued success as these new jobs come to our community and District 5 residents secure new and challenging career employment opportunities.
As always, if you have any issues or concerns you'd like to discuss, please call my office at 602-262-7446 or e-mail me at cmattox@ci.phoenix.az.us .
Yours truly,

Claude Mattox

The Sevilla Neighborhood Association, with boundaries from Bethany Home to Camelback roads, from 43rd and 35th avenues, recently asked Councilman Mattox to help conduct outreach to the Spanish-speaking residents in their neighborhood.
As a result, Councilman Mattox has asked the Neighborhood Services Department to bring its "Good Neighbor Program" to Sevilla. The Good Neighbor Program is designed to welcome, inform and organize Spanish-speaking families, as well as
encourage their integration and active participation in ongoing neighborhood improvement efforts.
City staff currently is conducting a training needs assessment for Sevilla residents, with the goal of building a broad-based partnership and kicking off the program in the fall.
