Councilman Greg Stanton

The Arizona Republic Letter to the Editor
May 6, 2005

AMC helps public

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank AMC Theatres for their efforts to improve pedestrian safety. The Esplanade 14 Theatre at 24th Street and Camelback Road is currently running a public service announcement before movies begin. It's aimed at encouraging pedestrians to cross only at traffic signals. The message on the screen is a simple one: "A few steps could save your life. Cross only at crosswalks."

The movie ad is part of a broader public campaign where a group of residents is helping the city plan important improvements. In the Camelback Corridor, the city has installed signs telling pedestrians to cross only at crosswalks, put in countdown signals letting walkers know how much time they have to cross, lowered the speed limit to 35 mph and put up a fence to cut down on midblock crossings.

So grab your popcorn, sit in a cool theater, watch our pedestrian safety message on the screen and help spread the word. - Greg Stanton
