Building Strong Neighborhoods through Active Neighbors

A neighborhood association is a group of residents that devote their time and energy to improve and enhance an area where they live. Their meetings provide a venue to interact with their fellow neighbors, exchange ideas, prioritize projects, recommend solutions and implement plans for the neighborhood. A well-organized group of people can be a powerful and influential force impacting change and improvements for their community.

An example of a successful neighborhood organization in North Central Phoenix is the Murphy Trails Estates Neighborhood Association. Since forming three years ago, its goals have been to promote security, protect and enhance property values and neighborhood character and also develop a sense of community. Over 300 households are represented by the group, totaling more than 1,000 residents.

Jackie Rich is the president and has organized the people of her community. She attributes the neighborhood group’s success to the dedication of the residents living there. “The Murphy Trails Estates Neighborhood Association is very lucky to have many dynamic residents who care about their neighbors and the quality of their neighborhood,” Rich said.

The group cares so deeply for their neighborhood that they have enhanced safety by working closely with law enforcement and city staff. By doing this, the group has had great success with their Block Watch Association, which currently has 25 captains and serves 17 blocks. In 2004 and 2005, the neighborhood group lobbied at the Arizona Legislature and assisted in passing a law that prevents large clusters of registered sex offenders from living in one complex. The group also helped police crack down on an illegal business in the community. Their watchful eyes paid off.

The group stays connected through e-mail using a neighborhood directory they created. This system allows neighbors to contact one another in times of need or emergency. E-mail has helped find lost pets; shared information about suspicious persons, crimes and crime prevention; identified crime trends to quickly get police assistance; and has provided information on bulk trash and hazardous waste collections and road closures.

By staying proactive, organized, and connected, Rich’s community can be comforted knowing that their neighbors are always looking for ways to keep the community safe and free from crime. I applaud Jackie Rich and her community for taking action and enhancing their quality of life.

Gathering with neighbors is a great way to take action against crime. This is why forming a group like the Murphy Trails Estates Neighborhood Association is the first step in protecting your community. Why wait for crime to happen in your neighborhood when you can catch it first? Protect your family and those around you – consider joining or forming a neighborhood association.
