Vice Mayor Greg Stanton Addresses Speeding on Pecos Road
Dec. 16, 2003
Due to increased speeding and a number of accidents along Pecos Road in the
Ahwatukee Foothills community, Vice Mayor Greg Stanton and the city's Police
and Street Transportation departments are taking steps to promote safer driving
and encouraging people to drive the speed limit.
"We need to take steps to ensure the safety of the children and families
in our community," said Stanton. "We urge the community to obey the speed
limit when driving on Pecos Road because it could be a matter of life and
death," said Stanton.
The Police Department has issued more than 350 speeding citations on Pecos
Road in the past year. In the last two weeks police officers issued 50 citations,
with the highest speed clocked at 85 miles per hour.
The city will take several steps to encourage drivers to obey the speed limit,
including:
- Installing traffic signals at the intersection of 32nd Street and Pecos
Road. The lights will be installed at the end of January, six months ahead
of schedule.
- Increasing police officer presence, including motorcycle officers with
radar and a speed-limit trailer to inform drivers of their speed.
- Replacing existing speed limit signs with larger, easy-to-read signs.
- Restriping the interchange at Desert Foothills and Pecos Road to make
the southbound and eastbound traffic flow more safely.
- Installing large warning signs advising motorists of intensive speed
enforcement.
- School Resource Officers will distribute information at the high school
to students and their parents about the dangers of speeding.
