School To Work

HONEYWELL, INC. & CREIGHTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) is a unique business education artnership designed to provide a vehicle for elementary school children to understand the workplace in action. KAPOW is supported by the Honeywell Foundation under a pilot program developed by the National Child Labor Committee and Grand Metropolitan. As part of the pilot program, ten Honeywell employees volunteer once a month to teach children about the attributes of work: positive work habits, self-awareness, occupational structure, and overcoming bias and stereotyping. Creighton teachers and Honeywell work together to teach the children about the world of work.

Leadership

DR. ROBERT DONOFRIO, SUPERINTENDENT & MURPHY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

For the better part of fifteen years, Dr. Robert I. Donofrio, Superintendent of the Murphy Elementary School District No. 21 in southwest Phoenix, has demonstrated strong leadership to the educational partnership movement. During this time period, his vision, effort and leadership has created countless of cutting edge partnerships/collaboration with state and local governments, community based agencies, business, non-profit groups, medical, behavioral health, human and social service agencies, etc. Many of these partnerships have been Mayor's Partnership Champion Awards winners themselves. For example, the Murphy/DES Family Assistance Center, Friendly House/Murphy Counseling Program, and the Garcia Business Partnership. Dr. Donofrio has presented at numerous city, state and national conferences on building partnerships/collaborations for a coordinated system of care for children, youth and families. He has done these presentations and consulted with several districts free of charge in an effort to provide leadership and a model (often referred to as the Murphy Model) in an effort to enhance the partnership movement in this city and state. While Dr. Donofrio would be the first to admit that it takes an entire village to make partnerships/collaborationssuccessful, Dr. Donofrio's leadership and vision have provided the ability to create the village.

Youth Development

NATIONAL COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG DEPENDENCE & XAVIER COLLEGE PREPARATORY

This partnership exists between The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) and Xavier College Preparatory High School and selected elementary grade schools in Phoenix. NCADD provides the education and training for Xavier High School student volunteers in a substance abuse prevention program which teaches the development of positive life skills and accurate, non-judgmental information about alcohol and other drugs. The trained volunteers then present the substance abuse prevention program called BABES (Beginning Alcohol and Addictions Basic Education Studies) to elementary age children use of puppets and stories.

Small Business

HERNANDEZ COMPANIES & GRANADA EAST SCHOOL

Mr. Augustine "Gus" Hernandez, president of Hernandez Companies remains committed to his involvement with children. He believes that "part of being in business is being involved in the community." His special dedication to a partnership with the Granada schools has been instrumental in bringing much needed resources to assist at-risk students at the Granada campuses. His financial support and personal commitment of time and effort to get new programs implemented, especially Communities in Schools (formerly Cities in Schools), has been met with much success!!

Innovation

ST. JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL/MERCY HEALTHCARE ARIZONA & ST. MARY'S, CENTRAL, BROPHY AND XAVIER HIGH SCHOOLS

Medward Bound is a program which has created a partnership between St. Joseph's Hospital/Mercy Healthcare Arizona and many high schools in Phoenix during the past six summers. It provides a unique opportunity for high school Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to learn and work alongside physicals in clinics, surgery and in the classroom. A unique curriculum for 6-8 weeks has 8-12 students committed to an intensive program of daily lectures, physical work alongside a physician in 8 clinical areas (Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Home Health, Sports Medicine, Pediatric ICU and Trauma (CU) and writing an essay on a clinical topic each week for presentation to other students. This program selects students who are not necessarily the "brightest and best", but rather those students who are "average" and may possibly be disadvantaged socio-economically or through disability. Students are solicited who have expressed an interest in volunteering in healthcare and who attend a high school in the Greater Phoenix Area. This corporate-educational partnership is a commitment to provide a unique experience for high school students who would not otherwise have an opportunity to examine potential careers in healthcare.
