Fall injuries are one of the main causes nationally for the loss of independence for people over the age of 60. The city of Phoenix Human Services Department recognized the need for a strategic initiative to educate citizens about the rising concerns of fall prevention.
The city developed Balanced Act, its fall prevention program to inform seniors and caregivers about the likelihood of falls that can lead to injury. The Human Services Department Senior Services Division offers this program at senior/community centers.
Balanced Act uses components of the national fall prevention program's action plan. The Matter of Balance is a program that helps participants address their fear of falling. Offered in eight two-hour sessions, 12 to 15 participants discuss their concerns related to falling, develop an action plan to address these concerns and start a stretching program to strengthen muscles that help them remain steady on their feet.
