Why Should the Phoenix Fire Department Want Fire Fit?

For the past several decades the Phoenix Fire Department has saved many lives by teaching the youth of our city Urban Survival. Through this program we have taught children fire prevention, survival behaviors, pool safety, and numerous other lessons that will make their lives better forever. Still, society is changing and the ways that we can improve the lives of our customers are still evolving. Fire Fit is a new way, it is another opportunity for Phoenix Fire Fighters to share our passion, our experience, our knowledge and our reputation to make a difference in our community.

Tomorrow's Customers
Last year the Phoenix Fire Department went on over 97,000 emergency medical calls. The U.S. has an epidemic of increasing obesity and inactivity. These 2 trends contribute to more than 300,000 cancer, heart disease, and diabetes deaths each year. Poor diet and inactivity are responsible for 14% of the deaths in the U.S., second only to tobacco (~18%). The percentage of overweight children has more than doubled in the last 30 years. After smoking, physical inactivity is the single largest health risk factor in the U.S. today. 63% of kids are no longer active by the time they reach high school. Less than 25% of children get 20 minutes of vigorous activity daily. For females and minorities the numbers are even worse.
As these statistics continue to worsen, more and more research is available that proves the positive benefits of regular exercise. Physical education programs are disappearing from our schools at a staggering rate. Obesity-related diseases currently cost the U.S. more than $100 billion per year.

Tomorrow's Fire Fighters
The job of a fire fighter is considered one of the most physically demanding and dangerous. It requires high levels of cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Almost 50% of all fire fighter fatalities are from cardiovascular disease. One out of every three fire fighters suffers an injury every year. The U.S. Military states the physical fitness of young recruits is worse then ever. Less than 25% of all high school students participate in a daily physical education program or participate in an after school sport.
