What is Fire Prevention?

Fire Prevention is an extension of Phoenix Fire Department Public Safety Members. The Phoenix Fire Prevention Division is lead by a Fire Marshal and a Deputy Chief.  Our Fire Inspectors are empowered by the Phoenix Fire Code, Chapter 15 of the City Code. The Fire Prevention Division is deeply integrated with community businesses, developers, contractors, owners, the Homeland Defense Bureau and Fire Operations (the responding firefighters).

Fire Prevention works closely with design professionals, contractors, building owners and mangers and event promoters to ensure compliance with the fire code and national standards.  Fire inspections and permits are the tools used by fire prevention to ensure that Phoenix is safe for its citizens and visitors.  The Fire Prevention Division works closely with the City's Planning & Development Department to keep Phoenix safe.

Fire Prevention Inspectors are certified and must attend continuing education training in order to conduct their duties and provide guidance to the public.  They are required to maintain a minimum of 2 nationally recognized certifications that must be renewed every 3 years.  Some inspectors maintain 3 certifications.

What is a Fire Inspector?

Phoenix Fire Prevention Inspectors are the boots-on-the-ground guys & gals who are conducting inspections everyday.  Fire Prevention Inspectors attend training and are required to maintain a minimum of 2 nationally recognized certifications that must be renewed every 3 years. Some inspectors maintain 3 certifications.   Everyday Fire Inspectors:

  • Ensure life safety systems in structures and at events
  • Respond to citizen and Police complaints of overcrowding, hazardous situations, unsafe events and conditions
  • Work with developers, business owners, contractors, Homeland Defense and Fire Operations to ensure public safety
  • Inspect state licensed facilities, including daycares, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and hospitals
  • Protect the community through routine inspections at high hazard facilities like the petroleum tank farm, water service sites, and the airports
  • Conduct high-rise inspections and evacuation drills
  • Ensures our tourists and out-of-state visitors are not placed in unsafe environments through routine inspecions of our convention center, hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and public gatherings
