Green Rail Corridor Demonstration Project

Green Rail Corridor ImagePhoenix experienced one of the most successful light rail openings in the country. The 20-mile light rail system was opened on time and on budget. Daily ridership numbers have exceeded expectations an average of approximately 58 percent.

The Green Rail Corridor Demonstration Project will enhance the success of the light rail by accomplishing reductions in energy usage and carbon emissions by focusing efforts to implement the six points in the Green Phoenix Plan that have been endorsed by the Phoenix City Council. This would include energy conservation, solar PV, LEED retrofits of public buildings and efficient city lights.

The project is being developed in partnership with Arizona State University’s Institute of Global Sustainability and includes an approximate 10-mile stretch of the light rail corridor, a half-mile wide, from Central Avenue and Camelback Road, to Washington and 52nd streets.

The city of Phoenix in partnership with ASU, APS, and several private corporate and small business partners recently received $25 million in stimulus/Recovery funds to apply to this effort. Learn about the grant to launch the Energize Phoenix project.
