Brownfields Community Planning Meetings Summary
The community planning meetings concluded on April 24. The next phase of the project is the preparation of the written Del Rio Area Brownfields Plan. City staff will incorporate information gathered from the community visioning and planning meetings and develop the plan. An outline of the plan's contents will be drafted by June 1. The complete draft plan will be made available to the community in August for comment with the final plan completed in September/October.
Planning Meeting #4, April 24, 2012, 6 p.m., Rio Salado Audubon Center, 3131 S. Central Avenue
The goal of the April 24 meeting was to gather input from the community on implementation strategies, potential resources (financial and other), and the next steps that should be taken after the written plan is completed. Brief updates from city staff were provided on the Parks Del Rio Landfill Master Plan Process and the South Central Transit Feasibility Study. The results of the Evaluation Exercise conducted at the March 27 meeting were also presented.
City staff presented information and requested input on potential resources available from federal and local government and possible next steps. Staff suggested applying for additional grant funds from the Environmental Protection Agency for environmental investigations is a logical next step. Additionally, staff presented information on the General Plan Update process and suggested that the Del Rio Area Brownfields Plan could be incorporated into the General Plan and invited the community to participate in this process. Participants at the meeting agreed with moving forward with incorporating the Del Rio Area Brownfields Plan into the General Plan.
The meeting concluded with a Del Rio Landfill Q&A session with city staff from Public Works and Office of Environmental Programs answering several questions from attendees specifically about the landfill.
As requested by attendees, the following information will continue to be provided to the community:
1. Progress reports regarding the development of the plan.
2. City Council meeting dates that include the Del Rio Area Brownfields Planning Project on the agenda.
3. Schedule of General Plan public meetings.
4. Updates on the Parks Del Rio Landfill Master Plan Process.
5. Updates on the South Central Transit Study and dates of future community meetings.

Planning Meeting #3, March 27, 2012, 6 p.m., Rio Salado Audubon Center, 3131 S. Central Avenue
The goal of the meeting was for participants to evaluate each of the site design alternatives using the community identified criteria previously prepared. In follow-up to a request for further information on air quality and dust control, a representative from Maricopa County Air Quality Department presented information on this topic. In addition, city of Phoenix staff presented an overview of city dust control programs. The following information was made available at the meeting:

Planning Meeting #2, Feb. 28, 2012, 6 p.m., Rio Salado Audubon Center, 3131 S. Central Avenue
The focus of this meeting was to continue to provide participants with information that is relevant to the project and will aid in the development of the area plan. Presentations were given by experienced environmental professionals on the basics of environmental due diligence and landfill redevelopment. More detailed information was also provided by the city of Phoenix on the Del Rio Landfill. The evening concluded with a presentation of the results of the Potential Redevelopment Opportunities/Brownfields inventory that was conducted for the area and decision making on this item will continue to the March 27 meeting. The revised Evaluation Criteria was also handed out and will be discussed further on March 27. The following information was made available at the meeting:

Planning Meeting #1 Jan. 31, 2012
Participants were provided with the proposed agenda and schedule for meetings, a recap of the results of the 2011 visioning workshops, a presentation on the South Central Corridor Alternatives Analysis, discussion of the Phoenix Parks & Recreation Department Master Planning process as it relates to the former Del Rio Landfill, including a call for volunteers, and a presentation on the comparison of land uses in the Rio Salado Beyond the Banks Plan to the design alternatives prepared by the community. The meeting concluded with participants developed the criteria to be used to evaluate design alternatives. The following information was made available at the meeting.
