What are the requirements for application? Applicants must have satisfactorily completed all courses for a master’s degree by the first day of the program year. You are eligible to apply if you still need to complete an internship, thesis, or a comprehensive exam, as long as all courses are completed.
Can I apply if I have a bachelor's degree and work experience? No, completion of all course work towards a master's degree is required.
What are the salary and benefits? Please see the job description at phoenix.gov/JOBSPECS/mindex.html for the present salary. The benefits package includes comprehensive health, dental and life insurance; 11 1/2 legal holidays plus three personal days, eight hours vacation leave per month (to be used after six months of service), and 10 hours per month sick leave. Medical and dental insurance are available to the employee and family for a low cost per month.
How long is the internship and why does it begin in the summer? The internship is for one year and runs the duration of the city’s fiscal year - July 1 through June 30, annually.
What happens after the year is completed? The city does not guarantee a job at the conclusion of the internship. Interns who successfully perform all duties assigned to a management intern are placed on the management assistant I eligible list at the conclusion of the year. Successful interns are highly recruited by city departments to fill available city jobs.
What should I submit? A completed application packet is required.  Recruitment opens annually in November.
What is the closing date for applications? All application materials must be received no later than the date indicated on the job announcement available during open recruitment.
How important are the application materials? Extremely important. Our review panel uses this information to select the most qualified candidates for interview.
When are decisions made about whom to interview? After the application materials are received, it takes about a month to review all of them. By the end of March, the selection committee narrows the field of potential candidates, who are brought to Phoenix for a panel interview. Final selections are generally made in late April or early May.
How many internship positions are available? In the past, the program has selected between two and four candidates annually.
How many applications do you receive? The city of Phoenix Management Internship is a nationally recruited position. Generally, an average of 90 applications are received.
Do you only hire interns from Arizona? No. Interns have come from all over the United States. In recent years, interns have been hired from Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, D.C., Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Texas, and California, as well as Arizona.
Where do the interns work? Each intern performs rotational assignments with the Budget and Research Department, City Manager's Office and select line departments. Past departments include: Development Services, Planning, Personnel, Neighborhood Services, Equal Opportunity, Aviation, Community and Economic Development, Human Services, City Clerk and Public Works.
What projects do the interns work on? Projects include: writing management studies, council reports and operations analyses; attending staff meetings; staffing City Council meetings and subcommittee meetings; responding to residents' requests for service; and analyzing departmental and program budgets.
