City of Phoenix Earns CIO Magazine's Top Award
The city of Phoenix has been awarded the CIO-100 award, which recognizes companies and organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in the use of technology. This is the second year in a row that the city has been honored and Phoenix again is the only local government among the 100 recipients selected.
"In order to survive in the competitive business world, companies rely on innovative ideas and development of those ideas into sound business processes," said Abbie Lundberg, CIO editor-in-chief. "Honorees of this year's CIO-100 have done just that and are being recognized for their ingenuity and success."
"It's an honor to receive this award two years in a row," said Mayor Skip Rimsza. "The city of Phoenix always has and will continue to find innovative ways to better serve residents."
This year's award focuses on demonstrating positive business performance through innovative practices and products. The focus of the city's winning entry is its E-Phoenix initiative. Still primarily in the development stage, E-Phoenix is an enterprise-wide approach for transacting city business online. The initiative grew out of a citywide task force appointed by City Manager Frank Fairbanks.
"Our employees are our best source of ideas," said City Manager Frank Fairbanks. "Part of what makes Phoenix a leader in innovative government is the ability of our employees to come together and find a solution that will work for the entire organization rather than for an individual project or department."
E-Phoenix will improve customer service by expanding service delivery hours, eliminating the need to travel, and extending access to services and information.
E-Phoenix will provide a seamless, customized "portal" to various electronic services offered by the city. Pilot projects underway include applying for most city jobs, obtaining building permits, and buying traffic accident reports and GIS data.
"We're very excited to be recognized for our innovative use of technology," said Danny Murphy, chief information officer (CIO) and director of the city's Information Technology Department. "With our E-Phoenix pilot projects nearing completion, we look forward to taking the next step on the path to e-commerce."
