Correctly planting a tree is more complicated than just digging a hole. Done properly, adding trees can reduce homeowners’ energy bills and increase home values. 

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is teaming up with some other agencies to offer a free tree planting and care workshops to teach residents the right way to choose, plant and care for trees. In addition to planting and care techniques, participants in the three-hour workshops also will learn how to choose the right tree for the right location, which is crucial to trees’ long-term health.

All workshops are from 9 a.m. to noon. Citizen Forest training takes place immediately after the workshop.

The workshops were made possible by funding from the Urban and Community Forestry Financial Assistance Program administered through the State of Arizona Forestry Division –Urban & Community Forestry, and the USDA Forest Service.  

Those that already have gone through the tree care workshop also can join a training to become a lead volunteer, a Citizen Forester, who leads other volunteers and city staff at future tree planting events.  A Citizen Forester Training course is available from 1 to 3 p.m. following the Tree Care Workshop.  Citizen Forester training entails more in depth tree planting techniques and knowledge, tool and site safety and how to help coordinate events and lead a group of volunteers.
