April 3, 2012
Today, the Phoenix City Council approved a contract extension with the Milwaukee Brewers to continue Spring training at Maryvale Stadium, through 2023.
“When I took office in January, there was a real possibility that 2012 would be the last season the Brewers would play in Maryvale,” said Councilman Daniel Valenzuela, District 5. “My colleagues on the City Council and I were committed to making sure the Brewers stayed in Phoenix so that we would continue to benefit from the $3 million in direct spending and more than $300,000 in local and state sales taxes generated each spring. Thank you to the Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority for considering this – this will be a big win for Phoenix.”
Beginning in 2015, the Brewers may terminate the agreement by giving notice to the city by April 15 of the year prior. The city will complete $1.5 million in facility improvements using Parks and Preserve Initiative funding. This funding is contingent upon approval of future repayment of $1 million by the AZSTA. Net funding for improvements by the city of Phoenix will be $500,000; no general fund dollars will be used.
