Phoenix’s vast network of desert preserves and hiking trails has earned the city recognition from National Geographic as one of the nation’s best hiking cities. The listing in the online story (available on the Trails and Desert Preserves page of the Parks and Recreation Department website at phoenix.gov/parks) refers to South Mountain Park/Preserve as “a veritable wilderness in the city…”
Phoenix’s desert preserve system is more than 30,000 acres and has close to 200 miles of trails through classic Sonoran Desert. Close to 700,000 city residents visited a Phoenix desert park or preserve in the past year.
Additional information on the parks, programs and facilities of the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department is available online at phoenix.gov/parks or by calling 602-262-6862.
