Phoenix City Councilman Tom Simplot invites the public on a nighttime bicycling adventure from Central Phoenix to Tempe at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14. The event encourages safe bicycle rides as a positive way to travel between the two cities.

This Night Ride is a collaboration of the city of Phoenix, the city of Tempe and METRO Light Rail, with sponsorships from central Phoenix businesses Slippery Pig Bike Shop, Power 1K Personal Training and Harley’s Bistro.  Councilman Simplot says biking is “a great way to meet your neighbors, get a little exercise and reduce your carbon footprint.” The route will begin and end at Light Rail stations for those residents who choose to incorporate light rail into their ride.

“Bicycle riding is enjoying a renaissance in the country and the Valley, and I hope this event will encourage people to get back on their bikes,” said Councilman Simplot. In addition to encouraging bicyclists to ride as a means of eco-friendly travel, the event encourages bike safety and the proper use of bike helmets and reflective gear.  Slippery Pig Bike Shop also will encourage bike safety by offering participants a 10-percent discount on all safety gear the evening of the ride.

The ride will start at Slippery Pig Bike Shop, 4412 N. Central Ave. The bike route will follow the Grand Canal through Phoenix and into Tempe, ending at Rula Bula, located at 401 S. Mill Ave.
