Today, the Phoenix City Council approved the Public Works Department’s plan to begin collecting trash and recycling on the same day.
“This is a win for everyone,” said Councilman Bill Gates, chair of the Finance, Efficiency and Innovation subcommittee. “This new process will be more convenient for customers, more efficient for city staff, and it will save about $1.3 million each year.”
Collecting trash and recycling on the same day will make it easier for customers because they will just need to remember to wheel the collection containers to the curb on one day, instead of two.
“This is another example of the city making changes to our current processes to become as efficient as possible and to save every dollar we can,” said City Manager David Cavazos. “The new process will eliminate the need for 12 trucks and 12 employees, saving more than $6 million over five years.”
The city will begin educating residential customers about the service change in the beginning of 2012. The new same-day collection process will begin July 1, 2012.
