Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for New South Mountain Community Library

The public is invited to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the new South Mountain Community Library on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. in the east parking lot off the main entrance at 7050 South 24th St., just north of Baseline Road.

The new 50,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open for the fall semester of 2011, will feature a children’s story room, large community meeting room, teen space, WiFi, study rooms, 131 public computers with Internet access, patio spaces and a new collection of newspapers and magazines, books, DVDs and CDs. The library will be operated jointly by Phoenix Public Library and South Mountain Community College.

Mayor Phil Gordon, Councilman Michael Johnson, Phoenix Public Library Assistant City Librarian Shera Farnham, South Mountain Community College President Dr. Ken Atwater and Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Dr. Rufus Glasper will speak at the event. There will be a special appearance by Phoenix Public Library children’s program mascot BookBreath and students from South Mountain Community College Jazz Ensemble will perform.

The library, designed by richärd + bauer, llc., is funded through the 2006 Citizens Bond Program and the 2004 Maricopa Community College District Bond Program.

South Mountain Community College, this year celebrating its 30th anniversary, is one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges.
