Elected Officials,Phoenix Police Remind Residents of Random Gunfire Dangers

Dec. 28, 2012

In 1999, a stray bullet killed 14-year-old Shannon Smith while she was talking on the phone in the backyard of her central Phoenix home.  Arizona passed Shannon’s Law in her honor, making it a Class 6 felony for anyone who with criminal negligence discharges a firearm in any Arizona municipality.  This is the 10th year that Phoenix Police is conducting its “Shannon’s Law Operation” on New Year’s Eve.  Police will have Neighborhood Enforcement Teams out in the community, passing out flyers and arresting violators.

WHAT: Mayor Greg Stanton, Councilman Michael Nowakowski, former Mayor Phil Gordon and Phoenix Police are holding a news conference to remind residents of the dangers of random gunfire during New Year’s celebrations.  They will join officers from the Cactus Park Precinct, passing out educational flyers at homes and businesses.  Phoenix Police, businesses and neighborhood groups are circulating 40,000 flyers all around the city.
