Dec. 29, 2013

Greg Stanton, With Caption 137 x 225 pixelsMayor Greg Stanton today commended the Phoenix Police Department and a vigilant citizen for their roles in stopping the interstate crime spree of a man responsible for killing a Mississippi police officer during a bank robbery.

On Saturday, the Phoenix Police Department was alerted to a bank robbery by a citizen who called 911 to report a man had entered a bank wearing a mask. The man was shot and killed by a Phoenix Police detective in an exchange of gunfire.

The man has been identified by the FBI as responsible for shooting and killing a Mississippi police officer and wounding another during a bank robbery, as well as an armed robbery of a bank in Atlanta.

“Public safety is the responsibility of both law enforcement and the public,” Stanton said. “In this case, the actions of a vigilant citizen and our outstanding police department put a stop to a multi-state crime spree that has already resulted in the tragic death of a police officer.”
