Sky Harbor Offers Tips for Holiday Travel

Phoenix, AZ – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is prepared for a busy travel week. The Christmas rush will begin Friday December 19 and continue through Monday, January 5. While annual traffic is down 5% at Sky Harbor compared to last year, the airport continues to serve over 100,000 passengers per day. Traffic will be steady throughout the holidays with 130-140,000 on busier days such as Friday, December 26.

Often referred to as a “great shopping mall,” there are fantastic gifts at Sky Harbor. Tamie Fisher, Deputy Aviation Director for Business and Properties says, “Sure you can buy cactus and tee shirts, but the incredible selection of golf wear, jewelry and designer accessories is spectacular.” Fisher says that a lot of people do their shopping on their way to their plane, or while they’re waiting for family to arrive because there are such good bargains, many as low as ten dollars.  The Airport even has tasty tamales and cookies in gift boxes to go!

New this year, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) added Family Lanes to security checkpoints at Sky Harbor. These designated security screening lanes are for those who need a little extra time, or who have medically necessary liquids in excess of three ounces. Visit www.tsa.gov for additional information.

Sky Harbor is offering these additional travel tips:

  • Check flight status before coming to the Airport, then arrive two hours early
  • If you plan to park at the Airport, call the 24/7 parking hotline at 602-273-4545
  • Pack larger quantities of liquids and gels in checked luggage
  • Leave gifts unwrapped. Bring your paper and wrap at your destination
  • Bring a snack for the plane. Drinks purchased past security may be brought onto the aircraft
  • Remember to check with your airline about baggage fees
  • Use the free, cell phone lots when waiting for arriving passengers
  • Starting December 29, take the free shuttle between METRO light rail and the airport
