Construction to Cause Major Detours East of Sky Harbor
Drivers should enter and exit the Airport from the west side for the next two weekends
Drivers headed to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport during the weekends of September 18 or September 25 should plan on entering and exiting the Airport from the west side. PHX Sky Train™ construction will result in significant traffic restrictions on the east side of Sky Harbor during these two weekends.
On both weekends, construction will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and end at 5 a.m. Monday. Even if you live east of the Airport, Sky Harbor recommends that you avoid using the 202 Freeway, State Route 143, or 44th Street when accessing Sky Harbor. Use Interstate 10 on the west side of the Airport instead.
East Economy parking will remain open and accessible both weekends.
If you are planning on taking METRO light rail to the Airport, please give yourself extra time. The Airport buses that travel to and from the light rail station at 44th and Washington streets will be detoured by the construction and may experience delays of several minutes or more.
The roadway restrictions will be in place while crews remove three bridges on the east side of Sky Harbor to create a path for the PHX Sky Train™ to come into the Airport. Stage one of the PHX Sky Train™ will transport Airport visitors between METRO light rail, east economy parking and Terminal 4. The first stage of construction will be complete in late 2012.
