International Air Service Booming in Phoenix

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is pleased to welcome a number of new, international flights to Phoenix. US Airways announced yesterday its intention to operate nonstop service between Phoenix and Tokyo using Airbus 330-200 aircraft beginning as early as 2012.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon has made international air service a top priority for his office, working closely with the airport on the most strategic routes.

“US Airways, our hometown airline, recognizes that Phoenix is an emerging international city and the right city to invest in international growth. In any economy, Phoenix has a very bright future and investing here makes good business sense,” said Gordon.

Danny Murphy, City of Phoenix Aviation Director, is very excited about international routes in Phoenix. In fact, just last week US Airways announced new service to Montego Bay, Jamaica, to begin in December. Agreements announced today also allows for US Airways to operate flights to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“We are so fortunate to have such excellent partners in Tempe based US Airways and their success is good news not just for Sky Harbor, but for the entire Valley,” said Murphy. “The company’s contribution to local jobs, low-cost travel and the economic vitality of this region is invaluable,” he said.

Current international service includes British Airways nonstop service between Phoenix and London and multiple routes to Mexico and Canada with various carriers. These have been excellent matches for service thus far, but as the economy improves, there will likely be additional interest in serving Phoenix.

Before becoming final, the new Tokyo service will require various government approvals and will be contingent upon economic conditions at the time.
