First American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Community Development Block Grant Recovery (CDBG-R) Breaks Ground
Construction is now underway on Arizona’s first inclusive Boundless Playground for children of all abilities at the Gompers Habilitation Center, 6601 N. 27th Ave. The city provided $50,000 in funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG-R) program, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The CIGNA Foundation also provided $50,000, with additional support from Gompers Board of Directors, local organizations and community members.
“We are thrilled to be part of this partnership to bring the first Boundless playground to Arizona,” said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon. “The city of Phoenix is committed to using ARRA funds to simulate Arizona’s economy and putting people to work.”
“This new facility will give all children, regardless of ability and special needs, the chance to be kids,” added District 5 Councilman Claude Mattox. “This is the kind of investment that will positively impact our community for years to come.”
The city of Phoenix supported the project with Community Development Block Grant Stimulus funding (CDBG-R), under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) because it addresses the purpose of ARRA’s goal, to stimulate the economy through creating jobs and provides needed facilities/service opportunities and infrastructure improvements.
“This is a great example of how CDBG-R funds are being leveraged and working to improve our neighborhoods,” said Jerome Miller, director, Neighborhood Services.
The $200,000 playground will create one permanent full-time position and three temporary positions, and will impact the lives of 300 individuals served each day by the Gompers Habilitation Center.
