Burton Barr Central Library, located at 1221 N. Central Ave., received the Paladin Award on Nov. 17, 2013 from the Gay and Lesbian Rodeo Heritage Foundation. The award was presented at the organization’s annual dinner in Los Angeles.
The award recognizes the library’s role in hosting “Out West” in March of this year. “Out West” was an exhibition of rare Arizona gay rodeo posters, programs, photographs, belt buckles and pins provided by Arizona Gay Rodeo Association. The exhibit was complimented by a series of programs exploring the contributions of the LGBT community to Western American history and culture.
Conceived by independent curator Gregory Hinton in 2009 in partnership with the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, “Out West” has been presented in ten states. It is sponsored by HBO, the David Bohnett Foundation and the Gay & Lesbian Rodeo Heritage Foundation.
