Mayor Gordon Celebrates Independents Week with Two Events
Local First Arizona and Mayor Gordon Lunch Locally at Maizie’s Cafe on Wednesday,
and visit local coffee shops on Thursday to celebrate Indie Week
Phoenix, Ariz., (June 29, 2009) - National Independents Week officially launches today and runs through July 5, bringing Valley businesses and the community together for an impassioned effort to support the local economy. Mayor Gordon will be showing his support of Independent businesses by participating in two Independents Week events, beginning with “Lunch Local” on Wednesday, July 1, and a coffee crawl on Thursday, July 2.
Lunch Local: Maizie’s Café (4750 N. Central Ave) 11:30 am – 12:30pm
The Lunch Local event invites the public to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, Maizie’s Café. Maizie’s is commemorating the week with a specially developed sandwich: the “Phoenix Phil-ly” Thinly sliced grilled prime rib with sautéed mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, melted provolone & mozzarella cheeses on a toasted sub roll. Served with homemade macaroni salad.
Coffee Crawl: beginning at Fair Trade Café (1020 N 1st Ave.) 7:30am
On Thursday, July 2, the Mayor will venture out for his 3rd annual Coffee Crawl from 7:30 to 8:30am - visiting four local coffee houses in downtown Phoenix. Fair Trade Cafe, Copper Star Coffee, Lola Coffee and LUX Coffee Bar welcome Mayor Gordon and coffee lovers to join in on the morning crawl.
"National Independents Week is a wonderful reminder about the economic, environmental and cultural benefits of supporting locally owned businesses," states Local First Director, Kimber Lanning. "Local businesses are the heart and soul of any great city, and Maizie's Cafe is a perfect example of a family-owned and operated business that is contributing to the vibrancy of our city."
Independents Week brings tremendous opportunity for both businesses and consumers. Participating local establishments from retail to restaurants will be accepting a special Golden Coupon worth 20% off purchases, a complete listing of which are displayed on the Local First website. Consumers can also “Take the Pledge” to go local for the week and view 10 Tips for Shopping Local to easily guide them through.
