DISORDERLY CONDUCT/WEAPONS VIOLATION
At around 8:15 a.m. on June 23, a male, later identified as Mr. Cambron, telephoned a local mental health crisis hotline and began making several threats including committing “suicide by cop” and crashing an airplane into a downtown Phoenix building. Mr. Cambron made reference to Deer Valley Airport during his call which propelled police to temporarily secure the public entrance to the airport.
Over the course of the day, Mr. Cambron made two more telephone calls to the crisis line, continuing his threatening behavior, which resulted in the use of multiple Phoenix Police resources, federal agencies and the Scottsdale Police Department in an effort to locate him.
Later in the evening the Phoenix Police Special Assignments Unit was able to make contact with Mr. Cambron and convinced him to meet and speak with a “counselor” in the area of 2700 West Bell Rd. at 8:55 p.m. Mr. Cambron was detained by police.
Mr. Cambron had revealed during his calls to the crisis hotline that he was unemployed and distraught. Police records indicate a criminal and civil offense history. Mr. Cambron was involuntarily petitioned to a county health facility for a psychological evaluation and charges for disorderly conduct and misconduct involving weapons will be submitted for prosecution. I have no information or details concerning the mental health evaluation process.
Once again it was the cooperation between local and federal enforcement agencies that brought this incident to a favorable and safe conclusion for our community and the suspect.
