Bicyclist struck and killed in crosswalk
A young man on his way to work this morning was struck and killed by a vehicle traveling westbound on Indian School Road. The man, a bicyclist, was crossing the busy intersection at 31st Avenue and Indian School Road at approximately 7:30 a.m. when a vehicle traveling westbound struck him, the impact sending him across the median and into eastbound traffic. A wheel of the bicycle was lodged under the vehicle and dragged by the car. The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with Phoenix police who continue to investigate.
This tragedy falls on the heels of two similar incidents this week. Phoenix police spokesperson Officer Luis Samuido offers this reminder to citizens, “While it is important to always practice safe driving habits on the busy streets of our city, drivers and pedestrians alike should be especially alert during the early morning and late afternoon rush hours when even bright sunlight can be a distraction. Be sure to concentrate on driving; slow down, do not text on cell phones, save phone conversations for later, watch for pedestrians and cyclists, and keep any other distractions from diverting your attention to the road.”
