Sunnyslope celebrates opening of police substation

Artwork outside of substationMembers of the Sunnyslope community joined in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the newest Phoenix police substation. Joining the residents during the morning event were Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, City Councilmen Bill Gates, Claude Mattox and Sal DiCiccio, Public Safety Manager Jack Harris and Desert Horizon Precinct Commander Sandra Renteria, along with officers from the Desert Horizon Precinct.

The Sunnyslope Neighborhood Police Substation, located at 750 West Peoria Avenue, will give officers additional capability to respond to calls more efficiently. Officer response times had been slightly slower due to the distant proximity of the Desert Horizon Precinct, but the location and technology incorporated into the new substation will allow officers to better serve residents through various crime suppression techniques.

The 7,500-square facility is a state of the art, fully operational police substation that features a 25-person briefing room and presentation equipment, a 12-person community meeting room, a prisoner processing area that includes five adult holding cells and two separate juvenile holding cells, administrative work areas, an evidence room, secured parking for 64 employees, an exercise room, break room, and officer lockers with restrooms and showers. Initially, the substation will be staffed with 70 officers and support personnel.

Following the brief ceremony, Phoenix officers provided a guided tour of the new facility to all who were in attendance.
