RECOGNITION FOR STORM CLEANUP EFFORTS

The purpose of this report is to provide special recognition to the various City of Phoenix departments, Salt River Project (SRP), Arizona Public Service (APS), and their respective employees who worked tirelessly to clean up storm damage resulting from a recent monsoon storm.

THE ISSUE

On the evening of August 28, 2008, the Valley experienced severe thunderstorms which resulted in the loss of power to over 80,000 homes, flooding, downed power lines, uprooted trees, and other storm related debris.

Parks and Recreation Department logged over 200 calls from residents with downed trees.  Forestry crews worked diligently throughout the weekend to clean up streets and parks from damage due to the storm.

OTHER INFORMATION

Parks and Recreation staff coordinated with the Streets Department on locating downed trees, and getting them out of the way.  Street maintenance crews worked all day Friday and over the weekend to respond to calls city-wide related to wind damage, trees blocking streets, and downed “STOP” signs with assistance from the Fire Department in removing trees on 3rd Street, south of Thomas.

In response to the damage caused by this powerful storm, over 20 motor brooms went to Sky Harbor International Airport to remove runway debris.  Approximately 500 passengers spent the night in the airport.  Regular arrivals and departures began again around 9 a.m., on Friday, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our Aviation Department employees.

Several city-owned facilities were damaged by the storm including, the Calvin Goode Building, Sky Harbor Airport, Family Advocacy Center, Tovrea Castle, and several golf courses.  Employees from the various departments quickly responded to the affected locations in order to minimize damage.

Employees from the Police, Public Works, Fire, and Street Transportation Departments worked extended hours to ensure City residents were able to travel safely on city streets on Friday.  While the Development Services Department and Historic Preservation Office provided inspections of commercial, residential and historic properties which were hit hard by the storm.

These coordinated efforts are testament to the City’s core value of “We work as a Team.”  A special thanks to the Aviation, Development Services, Fire, Library, Parks and Recreation, Police, Public Works, Street Transportation, and Water Services Departments, Emergency Management, Public Information, and Historic Preservation Offices for clearing debris, conducing repairs and inspections, and ensuring public safety.

Additional acknowledgement and special thanks are made to Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service for the quick response to downed electric lines and restoration of service to our residents.

DOWNTOWN HOTEL DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS

This report provides the Council with recent progress on the publicly financed and privately operated 1,000-room hotel in downtown Phoenix.

THE ISSUE

On June 16, 2004, the Phoenix City Council authorized the formation of the nonprofit Downtown Phoenix Hotel Corporation (the Corporation) to design and build a new, publicly financed, 1,000-room hotel at 3rd Street and Van Buren.  The new hotel will meet a vital need for additional hotel rooms in the downtown area.

OTHER INFORMATION

The month of August resulted in significant construction and operation milestones for the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. Sheraton’s administrative staff has moved onto the property to continue sales and operation functions. On August 13, the hotel received a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy which allows full occupancy of the building including overnight guests. Fixture, furniture and equipment installation is nearing completion in the hotel with installation occurring in the uppermost floors of the guestroom tower and in the public areas, including the hotel’s restaurant.  Preparations are underway for the hotel’s Grand Opening events which are scheduled to begin the first week of October.

Pursuant to the pre-opening agreement, the operator is required to report to the Corporation on its marketing and booking efforts.  In its role as the Corporation’s hospitality consultant and asset manager, Warnick and Company, will be responsible for auditing the operator’s progress and making regular reports to the board members.

Principals with Warnick & Company will present an update on the hotel’s sales, marketing and hiring efforts to date.

The hotel is hiring staff and is on schedule to open by October 1, 2008.
