South Mountain is the world's largest desert municipal Park. Features include a seven-mile paved road to lookouts at 2,300 ft. and 2,600 ft. in elevation. There are miles of trails for hiking, climbing, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Reservable ramadas are a great place for gatherings. The main ranger station was constructed with native stone in the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Gated areas open from 5 a.m. – 7 p.m. (trails remain open until 11 p.m.)

75-acre Park includes a 2.5 acre lake, an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 1,500 people,the 15-acre Entry Garden, the 30-acre Phoenix Green and the 15-acre Neighborhood Park that includes: playground, lighted basketball, fishing, grill, picnic area, ramadas, restrooms, lighted sand volleyball and a dog park. 
Open from 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. Steele Indian School Park Recreation office is open on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. to accept reservations for the parks large group ramada. You can also purchase beer permits and inflatable permits.
