Phoenix Perks Cafe and Programs

Approximately 300,000 residents living within the city of Phoenix boundaries, or more than 1.4 million people, one quarter of Arizona's population, are of the "baby boomer" generation born between 1946 and 1964. This large segment of the population now is turning 60 and entering their third stage of life. This significant demographic shift creates a need to rethink and redesign the way some public services are presented to this population. Traditional "senior services," which assist older adults in staying connected with others and ensure that basic needs are met, do not appeal to the baby boomer generation. However, services to this generation are just as critical to help ensure that boomers are well prepared for a long and healthy retirement

Staff worked with the community to give the café an identity and selected the name Phoenix Perks at Paradise Valley Community Center. The word "perks" has a threefold meaning: it is short for the word "percolate" as in to percolate coffee, denotes a lively and cheerful demeanor and refers to extra benefits. The word "Phoenix" also has several meanings. Most importantly, it represents the city, which serves and supports the program. In addition, the Phoenix bird is thought to be a magical bird that regenerates or reinvents itself after death. The combination of "Phoenix" and "Perks" symbolizes an uplifting place, in Phoenix, where the public can enjoy café fare and engage in new and revitalizing activities.

Café programming began in March 2008, and has offered baby boomers a contemporary and dynamic selection of classes and programs ranging from writing, legal rights and estate planning, caregivers' support, ceramics, to re-careering and laughter, where they have the opportunity to learn about public services available to them. Class registration is online at phoenix.gov/parks.

The Phoenix Perks Café facility, intended to serve the entire community, opened for business on Oct. 6, 2008, providing a beautiful, upscale café environment and an array of food choices including fresh-baked gourmet pastries and sandwiches. The café is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Phoenix Perks staff invites you to come see what the café has to offer, as it is a point of pride for our department!
