*On February 19, 1952, Officer Walter H. Stewart was killed when a truck turned in front of his police motorcycle at 2000 E. Washington Street. The driver fled the scene but was later arrested and charged with negligent homicide. Thereafter Phoenix motor officers were required to wear helmets while on duty.
Officer Stewart was 30 years old at the time of his death and is survived by a wife and two children.
