Citizen Police Academy
Information Provided by the Police Department

As you are most likely aware, the City of Phoenix is currently bracing for a substantial budget reduction. During this tumultuous time it is imperative that all employees direct their efforts on mission critical tasks. We recognize the value of the Citizen’s Police Academy and appreciate your willingness to be involved with this worthwhile program. We have decided to cancel the spring CPA class and will resume our normal schedule in the fall. All previously submitted applications will be reviewed for acceptance into the fall class (no need to reapply). Thank you for your understanding and continued support of the Phoenix Police Department.

Program Background

Since April 1986, the Phoenix Police Department's Citizen Police Academy (CPA) has given business and community leaders an inside look at law enforcement.  During the Academy, citizens visit the training academy and are introduced to:

  • K-9 units
  • Special Assignment Unit
  • Crime Lab tour
  • Police ethics
  • Discipline policy/philosophy
  • Radio communications
  • Drug enforcement
  • Gang enforcement
  • Traffic laws
  • D.U.I. Law
  • Firearms

Academy classes are taught by police executives and veteran officers.  Students will have the opportunity to meet with the Police Chief, and they are encouraged to ask questions and express their concerns to police employees.  The Phoenix Police Department hopes there will be a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement's role in the community through the education provided by the Citizen Police Academy.

Academy Schedule

The Phoenix Police Department offers several sessions of the Citizen Police Academy throughout the year.  Classes meet once a week for six weeks.  Classes are held on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  The sixth session of the Academy is graduation.  The classes are held at various police facilities within the City of Phoenix.

Entrance Requirements

Potential candidates for the Citizen Police Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Live/work in the City of Phoenix
  • No prior felony arrests
  • No misdemeanor arrests within six months of the application

Selection Procedure

Citizen Police Academy students are selected by the Police Chief through a nomination process.  Citizens are nominated by police staff and former Academy students.  The names of the selected candidates are then placed on a waiting list.  Enrollment is limited to approximately thirty students per session.
