TERMINALS
Terminal 4 - Final Concourse Addition
Terminal 4 opened in November, 1990 with five concourses and 48 gates. This terminal was built with expansion capabilities for up to eight concourses. To meet demand, in 1998, a sixth concourse was added and the international concourse was expanded to include more gates. In 2004, a seventh, state-of-the-art concourse opened.
The last concourse, west of Concourse D, will be built when airline demand warrants. This eight-gate extension will serve passenger needs until a new terminal is designed and built northwest of Terminal 2. More on terminal history.
Future Terminal
New passenger terminal facilities are an important component of Sky Harbor’s goal to be America’s Friendliest Airport™. Our passenger-friendly concourses, restaurants, retail areas and customer service initiatives are consistently praised by frequent travelers.
A new passenger terminal is being planned to open west of the current Terminal 2 when demand warrants. This terminal will allow passengers to move more quickly and comfortably through the Airport, and will meet the needs of our airline tenants as well as our thriving region. It is anticipated that the current Terminal 2 will remain in use until a new terminal is built.
The new terminal will more than double the capacity of Terminal 2, with 33 gates compared to the 12 current gates. The new terminal will no doubt attract a strong retail base, more jobs and help Sky Harbor remain the state’s largest economic engine.
Terminal 2 was considered a state-of-the-art facility when it was built in 1962. In fact, then first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, presented the FAA's first Airport Beautification Award to Sky Harbor's Terminal 2 in 1967. But in 45 years, times have changed and so have the needs of airport customers and terminals. Sky Harbor History.
