How Do We Raise the Bar in Filmmaking in Arizona?

By going out to see each other's work. By purchasing tickets at our local theaters that show locally produced films. By watching our fellows filmmakers as they appear in local media. By catching the newest web series, or locally produced local cable television shows. By rewarding creativity. By challenging ourselves to do better. The Independent Feature Project wants to support our local filmmaking community by creating a public calendar that lists these types of events into one general guide that will give you ideas on how to spend your Saturday nights. If you have an event that falls in this category, please email for details.

The More You Know - Notes From the Film Office

Storm Water Discharge

Did you know that if you utilize a rain maker for your project that a special permit is needed for the discharging water entering the City's storm drain system?

Not to worry though, it is free and the Phoenix Film Office can help walk you through the process. Just give us a few days notice as we have to work with another government agency so there might be a slight delay.

The reason the City requires this permit is to reduce the addition of pollutants to storm water in quantities or concentrations that could violate applicable water quality standards.

2008 Report on the Motion Picture Incentive Program

PIRANHA 3D MOVIE - MORE EXTRAS NEEDED!

The Arizona Department of Commerce has released the 2008 Calendar Year report on the Motion Picture Incentive Program.

Greetings! We have had a very good response to our recent call for extras on this movie. We are sending out the notice again because we need MORE MORE MORE extras. Please don't resubmit if you have already submitted on this production. If we are interested in casting you, we will contact you very soon so please be patient. We are now also seeking Amputees' to be featured extras in the piranha wounded scenes. These folks are harder to find so please help us spread the word. Because they are featured extras, the amputees will be paid more.

In addition, here is some info that might help answer some questions.

#1, the speaking roles have been cast or are close to being cast so we are no longer taking submissions for speaking roles.

Next, the pay on this for extras is minimum wage with overtime over 8 hours, and "bumps" (additional pay) for special skills if applicable. See below for "incentives and prizes also being offered." There is no additional pay for travel or accommodations. We are working out a deal with local hotels in Lake Havasu City to offer room rates for about $49. We are also planning a "mixer" here in Phoenix to allow those selected to meet each other and perhaps find a roommate(s) and/or someone to ride with. However, we are NOT ABLE to coordinate any specific travel and accommodation arrangements for liability reasons. The majority of extras will be needed for two weeks starting June 1 through June 13th. We would love to have you for the whole time but if you can work some but not all the days, please submit that also. We will take what you can give us as long as you "commit" and don't bail at the last minute. The shoot is from May 11th through July 11th but we are seeking "hot" 18-25 year olds and Amputees' only for the 2 week period mentioned. Under NO circumstance are we allowed to cast anyone who is not 18 years old. Period. No exceptions. Please don't submit any minors. This is an opportunity to be involved in something really big, and really fun. Nobody is getting rich of this extras job, or any extras job for that matter, but it is a team effort to make a good film here in Arizona. Good attitudes and strong work ethic a must on this shoot.

To Submit: Send an email to GFCsubmissions@gmail.com with your name, agency if any, union status, height, weight, city you live in, age or range, phone numbers, email, with a close up photo and a full-body photo in jpg format attached. If you have professional photos, please also submit those photos. Photos in swimwear is a plus. Please also note if you have any special skills or strange human tricks such as flips, roller blading, etc. etc. Think outside the box. What can you do do stand out from the crowd? This might be the thing that gets you more pay! When you submit, Please put the word "Fish" in the subject line of your email. If you are an amputee, please put that in the subject line. Please do not direct us to a photo of you on another site and do not assume we already have your photo even if you have worked with us before. Each new project requires a new submission. No phone calls please. Do not submit if you already submitted for this production.

The More You Know - Notes From the Film Office

Economic Impact Reporting

Did you know that the Phoenix Film Office tracks the money spent by filmmakers in Phoenix?

Every year after the first of July, the Phoenix Film Office publishes its annual report detailing the number of crew members and talent hired, production days, hotel nights and the overall economic impact on the Valley from the film industry. We do this because, A) it is important for elected officials to see how our industry affects the economy and B) no one else is doing it.

Here is how you can help! The Phoenix Film Office is generally only aware of projects when they contact us directly. However, it is no secret that filming occurs daily in studios and throughout the Valley. When you work on one of these projects, ask the Producer or UPM to fill out our survey (see the link in the left navigational bar titled "Survey") and we will be able to understand the positive affect the production had on our workforce and tax revenue.

The More You Know - Notes From the Film Office

Did you know that you can submit your location photos to the Phoenix Film Office?

When producers or production companies contact our office seeking locations, we create a link and send them as many photos as we have in our database in an effort to bring them to Phoenix to hire locals and spend locally.

Unfortunately, we do not have everything and here is where you can help!

Submit your location photos (high res-jpegs) to the Phoenix Film Office and we will be sure to include them in the link we generate should they match the request. You are encouraged to watermark the photos with your company contact information so we identify the photographer and the Producer may contact you directly (potentially great advertising for a location scout…).

To submit photos, either email them to filmphx@phoenix.gov or create a CD and mail it to:

ASU - 13TH Annual Short Film and Video Festival

Saturday, April 18th 8pm - FREE ASU Art Museum outdoor back plaza *bring your lawn chair, blanket or other seating, we don't provide chairs

http://asuartmuseum.asu.edu/filmfest/

An annual outdoor film and video festival to celebrate the artistic and creative endeavors of people with different visions and levels of experience.

The festival is part of the Museum's Moving Targets initiative which builds on the museum's long history of exploring the role of new media in the arts. It expands into new territory through presentation of new media and new systems for information delivery to the ASU Art Museum's audiences. The museum presented its first media exhibition in 1993, Nam June Paik: Time for Change and represented the U.S. at the 1995 Venice Biennale, Italy art exhibition with the work of five installations by Bill Viola. We support emerging artists and critically acclaimed practitioners of new genres through solo exhibitions, including William Kentridge, Shirin Neshat, Jim Campbell, Pipilotti Rist, Gary Hill, Francesco Torres and the current exhibition Breathing is Free: 12,756.3 - New Work by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba. In 1997, the museum developed the annual short film and video festival, which continues to present the work of international artists. As technology penetrates all aspects of art, the museum strives to present the most innovative and engaging works.

A movie style snack bar will be available for cheap treats before the event and during intermission.

The More You Know - Notes From the Film Office

Are you interested in having your home or business appear in movie, TV show, Commercial or still photo shoot? Not sure where to start? There are a couple of options available to you.

First, take hi-resolution digital photos and email/mail them to the Phoenix Film Office. We will save the photos on our hard drive and when a production comes to town looking for a home similar to yours, we will send your photos as well as those of other homes that might be of interest. Please email the photos to filmphx@phoenix.gov or, if you are sending many, save the photos to a disk and mail them to:

Mail:    City of Phoenix Phoenix Film Office 200 West Washington, 19th Floor Phoenix, Arizona 85003

Second, contact local location scouts listed in our directory. A location scout is a freelance individual that productions contract to find the right location for their project. A list of location scouts can be found at:

http://phoenix.gov/FILMPHX/locatsco.pdf

If your home is selected for the production, and your home is located in Phoenix, then our office will work directly with the location scout on logistics such as street closures, neighborhood notification and hiring of police officers. Should your home reside in another city, the location scout will contact that city directly as each city has their own rules and regulations.
