Mayor Gordon Unveils Green Phoenix Initiative During State of the City Address; U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu Endorses Plan

Photo of downtown Phoenix skylineThe city of Phoenix is aggressively working to secure funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create local jobs and stimulate our economy. President Obama created a Web site, recovery.gov, to ensure that this new law is carried out with transparency and accountability across the country. The city created this site, phoenix.gov/recovery, to mirror the transparency and accountability at the federal level, and to serve as a resource for our community.

With the current state of our economy, we realize that this stimulus legislation has the potential to provide immediate funding for projects that will boost our economy and create jobs. The stimulus provides funding in two ways - formula funds and competitive grants.

President Obama and Mayor GordonThe same week this legislation was signed into law, Mayor Gordon met with President Obama, Vice President Biden, and members of the Cabinet along with other mayors to discuss the implementation of the legislation and to advocate for Phoenix projects that are “shovel-ready.”

The Mayor and City Council will continue to work closely with city staff to pursue competitive grant opportunities with the goal of to obtaining as many benefits of the ARRA as possible for the residents of Phoenix. The city wants to use these funds to put as many people to work as quickly as possible.

While the city will remain focused on securing dollars from the stimulus legislation, we also are closely monitoring the President’s new legislation regarding foreclosure prevention. For more information, visit our Federal Legislation on Foreclosure Prevention Web page.
