Tom Simplot was first elected to the Phoenix City Council in 2003 in a special election to replace outgoing councilmember Phil Gordon. He was re-elected to four-year terms on the City Council in 2005 and 2009. In January 2009, he was unanimously voted by his fellow council members to serve as Vice Mayor. He represents a widely diverse district in the heart of metro Phoenix.
Tom’s primary goals have been to bring stability to west/central Phoenix neighborhoods, helping small businesses to succeed, and preserving the character of our historic areas. He believes residents can reclaim their neighborhoods with the help of city services, and encourages the development of the arts and culture community within the city’s central core. He has worked with community groups to bring more attention to the city’s west side and to capitalize on the arts and business potential of downtown. He is a strong advocate for ending homelessness, successfully leading the effort to build permanent supportive housing near the Veterans Hospital in central Phoenix.
As a longtime resident of Phoenix, Councilman Simplot has been active in the community for many years. He has served as the president of the Maricopa County Board of Health and the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority, chair of the Phoenix Historic Preservation Commission, and a member of the Phoenix Housing Commission, among others. Currently, Simplot serves on the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Symphony Association, on the board of Southwest Human Development, a community-based social service agency, and also serves on the Community Advisory Board for Wells Fargo Bank. He also recently served as one of three municipal members of the Federal Communications Commission Intergovernmental Advisory Committee. Simplot currently serves as chair of the Parks, Arts, Families & Seniors City Council subcommittee, and is a member of the Finance Efficiency, Innovation & Sustainability subcommittee and the Neighborhoods, Planning & Development, Housing & Homeless subcommittee.
In addition to his position on the Phoenix City Council, Simplot is president/CEO of the Arizona Multihousing Association and is an attorney and licensed realtor. He has also worked in public service at the state and county levels as a senior advisor to former Governor Fife Symington and as chief of staff to former Maricopa County Supervisor Betsey Bayless.
