Kids ages 7 through 14 who want a fun way to get active and experience track and field events can join the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department when it hosts the local Hershey’s Track and Field meets. The meet is open to anyone, and no experience is necessary, kids just need to like to run, jump or throw.
The department is offering their Hershey’s meet on April 20 at Phoenix College, 1202 W. Thomas Rd. Kids can compete in two main age groups: 7 – 8 and 9 – 14. Kids in the 7-8 year-old age group can choose from 50 and 100 meter dashes, softball throw and standing long jump. Older age group kids can choose the same events plus some longer running race distances such as 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters. First and second place winners in the older age groups qualify for statewide competitions.
Hershey’s Track and Field meets are held nationally and are among the largest youth track and field events in the country.
Participation is $5 and includes a T-shirt. Comprehensive information and online registration is available on the department’s event webpage. Information also is available by phone at: 602-534-5252. The registration deadline is April 14.
