Join Councilman Daniel Valenzuela and Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman for the kick-off of the FitPHX Senior Champions Program at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at the Helen Drake Senior Center, 7600 N. 27th Ave.

“FitPHX is unique because everyone, from our youngest residents to our valued seniors, is encouraged to join our team,” said Councilman Valenzuela.  “The Senior Champions Program plays an important role in helping reach our goal of becoming one of the healthiest cities in the county.”

“This program offers seniors the chance to reach for their own personal ‘gold’ and become champions for healthy living,” said Hyman.

During the kick-off event, participants from the city’s 15 senior centers will be provided a FitPHX Passport, which they will use to track their progress completing a variety of events.  Activities will focus on four areas of wellness: physical activity, nutrition education, mental wellness and overall health awareness.  Each senior center will select two gold medal winners to participate in special volunteer recognition event in December.

In 2012, the American Fitness Index ranked the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale area 26th out of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the country for health and community fitness.  FitPHX’s goal is to reach the top 10, focusing on obesity, nutrition education, coronary heart disease, asthma, and encouraging the use of public transportation, bicycling and walking to work.  To get started, visit phoenix.gov/fitphx or call 602-262-7446.
