Today, Mayor Stanton appointed Vice Mayor Gates to chair the newly formed Pension Fairness and Spiking Elimination Ad Hoc Subcommittee, [PDF] stating: “I appreciate Vice Mayor Gates’ leadership on this important issue and look forward to working with the subcommittee.”

The Subcommittee has been asked to report its recommendations to the full council by Oct. 4. Vice Mayor Bill Gates issued the following statement after being selected chairman of the subcommittee:

“We must end the practice of pension spiking at the City of Phoenix. The practice of pension spiking erodes public trust. I am under no illusion that this will be an easy task, but I am honored by Mayor Stanton’s appointment and look forward to leading the charge for meaningful reform on this important issue.

“While I believe pension spiking should end immediately, we must analyze the possible ramifications – including legal challenges – of any actions we take with regard to pension spiking.

“I would also like to thank my colleagues who agree we must do something to address the problem of pension spiking and especially Councilman Sal DiCiccio for his leadership on this issue.  His constant focus on ensuring this topic remains a top priority prevents any further delay.

“I look forward to working with all my colleagues to end this practice in a meaningful way.  By addressing the issue of pension spiking immediately, we will better protect taxpayers and begin to restore our residents’ trust in city government.”
