Councilman Valenzuela's Statement: Partnership w/ASU to join Alexandria Network

Sept. 18, 2013

Councilman Valenzuela Headshot for News with Caption"Today, my colleagues and I on the Finance, Efficiency and Economy Subcommittee voted to recommend to the full City Council a partnership with the Arizona State University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group to join the Alexandria Network - Arizona. In April, I was honored to provide my policy initiatives to my Council colleagues, including supercharging entrepreneurship in Phoenix. This year, I have worked with the city's Community and Economic Development Department to meet with incubators, start-ups and educational institutions, including ASU, to encourage partnerships that foster entrepreneurship in our city. This Eureka concept, in collaboration with the Alexandria Network, provides the space, resources and mentorship - and frankly, the fuel - to transform ideas into economic engines for our city.

The Eureka concept provides free access to a workspace, technology, including computers and WiFi, and library resources, including staff to assist with the accessing of information and materials needed.  Pending full council approval, we will move fast.  Eureka will open at Burton Barr Central Library, in November, with plans for rapid growth to other library branches - to take these resources into our neighborhoods where these economy-boosting ideas are being born. This partnership is just the beginning of many great things to come, as we continue to transform Phoenix into an entrepreneurial center for the Southwestern United States."
