On February 19th, 2013 Phoenix Police Officer Kris Packard went to the apartment complex at 14221 N. 51st to take a stolen bicycle report. Kris met with Ms. Amanda Lowe and her 13 year old son Lane and learned the bike was stolen from the front of the home.
Officer Packard also learned Lane’s father (Amanda’s husband) was killed last year by a drunk driver. Officer Packard, who specilizes in drunken driving arrests, recognized that Ms. Lowe had been struggling financially since the loss of her husband and he decided he would do something to assist the family.
Officer Packard teamed up with Officer Richard Codding and the Wal-Mart at 1825 W. Bell and, on March 9th, 2013 the officers and representatives from Wal-Mart surprised Lane with a new bike during his birthday party at Rio Vista Park. Wal-Mart donated the bicycle and the officers donated a bicycle lock and helmet.
Ms. Lowe was so moved by the generosity she cried and Lane was extremely happy and grateful for the bike. As for our officers and the staff from Wal-Mart, well, we’ll suffice it to say they all slept very well that Saturday night!
Our officers go about their day to day business with great pride and with determination to keep our community safe; and in the middle of it all they often define what it really means to “give back”. It makes us all look good. Kudos!
