Fallen Officers for the Month of May

 

fallen officer Polmanteer On May 4, 1984, Officer Robert L. Polmanteer #3549 was killed when his police motorcycle collided with a van at 3700 E. Thomas Road.  

Officer Polmanteer was 37 years old and had been a police officer for fifteen years, five of which were with Phoenix.  

He is survived by his wife and three children, including his daughter Charmane, who would later join the Phoenix Police Department.

fallen officer Collings On May 27, 1988, Officer Kenneth L. Collings #3855 was fatally shot while working off-duty at a bank located at 2105 W. McDowell Road.  Kenneth confronted two robbery suspects, one of which was able to shoot him and escape.  Officer Collings died a few hours later.  One suspect was arrested, while the other escaped to Mexico.  The outstanding suspect was arrested by Mexican officials twelve years later after being wounded in a shoot out with police.  The suspect was extradited to U.S., stood trial and was convicted.

Officer Collings was 32 years old and had been an officer for eight years.  He is survived by his parents.

fallen officer KiefferOn May 7, 1977, Sergeant David “Marty” Keiffer #2014 was seriously injured in a traffic collision when a drunk driver struck his car at 16th Street and McDowell Road.  As a result of his injuries, Sergeant Keiffer was rendered a quadriplegic.  

He continued to work for the department until retiring on September 13, 1991.  

On May 21, 1997, he died after succumbing to the injuries he had received 20 years earlier.

Sergeant Kieffer was 53 years old and survived by his wife and children.

fallen officer SchultOn May 10, 2004, Officer Don R. Schultz #4410 was searching for evidence in the Arizona Canal at 19th Avenue and Hatcher Road with other members of the Phoenix Police Department’s Dive Team.  Don came loose from his tender line and was found lodged in a canal gate and freed by other members of the Dive Team.  He was hospitalized and passed away two days later.

He was 43 years old and had been an officer for almost 20 years. 

He is survived by his wife.

fallen officer UribeOn May 10, 2005, Officer David Uribe #4276 made a traffic stop at 3400 W. Cactus Road.  As he approached the vehicle, he was shot by a suspect.  Officer Uribe was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds later that day.  

He was 48 years old and had been an officer for 22 years. 

 He is survived by his wife, two stepchildren and 5 children, including his son Adam, who is also a Phoenix Police Officer.

fallen officer MurphyOn May 26, 2010, Officer Travis P. Murphy #8474 responded to a report of shots fired.  The suspect fled, but a description of his vehicle was broadcast over the police radio.  Several minutes later police dispatch received reports of a male who was seen attempting to hide in a or under a vehicle under a tarp at a vacant home in the area of 19th Avenue and Fairmount Avenue. Officer Murphy, along with several other officers, responded to the scene and started searching for the suspect on foot. Officer Murphy encountered the suspect and was shot. Officers placed him in a patrol car and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a short time later.
Officer Murphy was 29 years old and had served with the department for four and a half years. He is survived by his wife, two year old daughter and two week old son.
