Fallen Officers for the Month of March

On March 3rd, 2014, Detective John Hobbs #5624 and Detective Albert “A.J.” Casados III #8467 were attempting to make contact with a violent suspect. Upon contact with the suspect, Detectives Hobbs and Casados became involved in a gun battle at which time Detective Hobbs was fatally wounded. Detective Hobbs was hired on the department on October 22nd, 1992 and had just completed his twenty-first year.

Detective Hobbs is survived by his wife, Cathy, and their three children. During this incident, Detective Albert “AJ” Casados III #8467 was also wounded; A. J. is recovering from his injuries.

On March 26, 1999, Officer Marc T. Atkinson #5930 began following a suspicious vehicle, occupied by three suspects, in the area of 31st Avenue and Thomas Road. The driver lured Officer Atkinson into an industrial area at 30th Avenue and Catalina Drive where he was ambushed by gunfire and killed. A citizen who witnessed the incident engaged the suspects in a gunfight with his own weapon, seriously wounding one. The other two suspects fled but were later arrested.

Officer Atkinson was 28 years old and had been an officer for almost five years.

He is survived by his wife and seven month old son.



 *Both Officer Haze and Officer Stewart were hired before the days of our current “serial number” system.

The Phoenix Police Department is hosting our second annual Phoenix Police Department Memorial on April 30, 2014. The event will take place at Phoenix City Hall beginning at 6:00PM and will conclude at the Phoenix Police Museum. This memorial service is open to the public.
